For years AARP Medicare Supplement plans (insured by United Healthcare) have offered the SilverSneakers fitness program to their members as a valuable added benefit. This exclusive member service entitled plan holders to free gym memberships at participating workout facilities like the YMCA, Curves, and Anytime Fitness.
With gym memberships at some of these places costing $50 or more per month, this was a great value for AARP Medigap plan members that took advantage of it. Also, SilverSneakers members enjoyed other perks available like a wide variety of exercise classes and personalized workout instruction.
However, AARP will be eliminating this SilverSneakers benefit for 2017 in Michigan.

If you have an AARP Medigap plan in Michigan, you’ve likely received a letter by now letting you know about this change. Instead, AARP Medigap plans will have a 50% discount off of memberships at some participating gyms. In addition, they’ll be providing members access to wellness coaches (by phone), online health-related resources, and some community activity events like yoga classes.
Do you love your SilverSneakers program but also love the great coverage you have with your AARP Medigap plan? Don’t worry, you may be able to have both! There is still one Medigap insurance company left in Michigan that provides this SilverSneakers benefit. And their rates are not sky high to be able to offer this program, but rather are very comparable to the AARP plan rates across the state, and even lower in some areas.
